Jackson-ish

My friend Mary titles her posts that have to do with things her kids say as the name of the child plus ‘-ish’.  I love the idea, so am stealing it for here. :)  Thanks, Mary!

Every week we read some sections of the character book we are doing to start out our school time.  There is a new word every week, and this week the word was diligence.

Friday morning I asked Jackson what our word was for the week, as it was one that was harder to remember.  He looked at me and said ‘due diligence.’

Do you think we’ve been in this house hunting process long enough? :)

5 year old spelling

So, what do you think it says below?
groin

I saw it and cracked up.  Because doesn’t it say “only hot wheels can dance on the groin?”

When I asked Jackson to clarify what he wrote, he said very clearly, “Only Hot Wheels can dance on the drawing board!” (he tends to just finish words on the next line or wherever they fit on the page)

Of course.  Silly me. Poor Jackson just did not get why we could not stop laughing. And being the proper mother I am, he did it again and I told him how to spell everything the right way.

More funnies

Recent things heard around our house:

Yesterday, Jackson and Morgan were playing in the living room while I was in the kitchen.  I was listening to them talk and play, and overhear Jackson look at Morgan and say ‘are you thinking what I’m thinking?’  It was really cute, not sure where he heard that phrase!

Morgan has been talking up a storm lately - most of the things she says are SO CUTE but most of the cuteness is in the way she says it, so it wouldn’t be all that funny to post here.  But she has been very adamant about something lately -whether it be dirt, what’s in her diaper, or something else yucky, she looks at it and says really big ‘EWW.  No eat that!!’

And finally, this one is not completely rated G.  And it has a bit of background.  First off, I have a small mole that you can see right by my collarbone - Morgan used to ask me all the time what it was, and I would say it’s a mole.  Well, one day a couple months ago she had her shirt off while getting dressed, looked down at her nipples and said ‘mole!’, like she had just discovered something very exciting.  I think I was laughing too hard to correct her.  I am still nursing Mackenzie, and I do it in the living room with the kids, and they know that she drinks Mommy’s milk.  So tonight Gavin was putting Morgan to bed, and she was holding her blue baby (she has 2 babies - one is just called baby, and the other is blue baby, because she has on blue clothes).  Here’s how the conversation went:

Morgan: makes her blue baby do the sign for ‘more’
Gavin: Is blue baby hungry?
Morgan: ‘Yes, blue baby more eat’, and pointed to her own belly.
Gavin (being silly): ‘Does blue baby eat from your tummy?’
Morgan: ‘Nooooo, blue baby eat mine mole’  (translation: blue baby eats from my  mole - her ‘my’ is said ‘mine’).

Hilarious.

Morgan-isms

This is the 2nd part of her speech post that I did over a month ago. I am happy to say that about 2 weeks after her hearing test, the 2nd week of August, she started talking! And she has really taken off - she’s not quite saying complete sentences, but almost. So much so that I ended up canceling the speech evaluation that was scheduled for September 1st. I felt at this point it would be a waste of time and money, and if she ends up hitting another road block, my referral is good for a year so I can reschedule for later.

In the last month, I have realized how much really knows but has never been able to say. She knows her ABCs (by the sound they make more than the ‘name’ of the letter), can count to 10, knows all her colors, etc. Lately she has been hilarious in some of her phrases, so I thought I would put a few here.

One of the first things that she ever said was in response to my question of what kind of sandwich they wanted for lunch. Her response?
“Ham and cheese. No ham” (with the word ham sounding like ‘am’ and all of the words kind of blending together.  It was hilarious.)

The last week everything she says has been either ‘watch me’, or ‘me too.’  She desperately wants to be a part of conversations, so even if it has nothing to do with her, she yells out ‘me too!’.

Then in the last couple days she has been using the word ‘little’ all the time.  It’s really funny, because yesterday we had this entire conversation about how she wants to ride in a little space shuttle, not a big one (yes, Jackson is still into space shuttles).  She has been very adamant that she wants to ride in a little airplane (in the air), not a big one (as they are when on the ground).  Gavin got most of yesterday’s conversation on video, so we need to upload it because it really is hilarious.

So I’m SO thankful that she just finally started talking on her own (at 2 years, 7.5 months) and we didn’t have to go the route of speech therapy of some sort.  The days when I hear the words ‘mama, watch me’ for the 1000th time, I just have to remind myself that it’s SO MUCH better than hearing ‘uh huh’ like she used to do.  It has also helped quite a bit with her tantrums because she is able to communicate so much better.  Yeah for Morgan!

Healthy tummys

A couple weeks ago Jackson woke up not feeling well, and ended up throwing up a couple of times that morning.  He seemed to be feeling better by lunch, but I was hesitant to give him too much, so I allowed him a few crackers.  He took a nap, and when he woke up I went in to see how he was doing:

Me: How are you feeling, how’s your tummy?
Jackson: My tummy wants some vegetables!
Me: Oh really?  Wow!  Anything specific?
Jackson: Yes, it wants broccoli.

How often does your kid ask for broccoli?  We didn’t have any in the house but had to go to the store anyway that day, so I got some for dinner.  Go figure he didn’t touch it. :)

The next American Idol?

Even though Morgan STILL hardly says any words, she is often found humming a song that Jackson has sung or that was playing on their kids music. Usually ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’ or ‘Brother John’ or something like that - she plays and hums away.

At night we have started a new routine where I sing her 3 songs - ‘Ring Around the Rosy’ and ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ (her favorites), and then ‘Jesus Loves Me.’ When I sing Jesus Loves me, she starts chiming in on the 2nd half of the song, literally belting out the words ‘yes’, and ‘me’ (in ‘yes, Jesus loves me’). She is completely off key and not even singing at the same time as me, but it is absolutely adorable - it’s hard to make it through the song without laughing. We need to get it on video some time. She is usually the last kid to get put to bed, so it’s the perfect ending to my day, especially if it has been a rough one. I look forward to one day soon when she says more words to hear her sing the whole thing along with me!

Like mother, like son

Today Jackson was coloring in an apricot in one of his workbooks, and he asked me “Mommy, can you buy some apricots sometime… so I can try them… if they are on sale?”
I’m teaching him well! :)

The spelling curse

Jackson has really gotten into spelling lately, and has gotten quite good at sounding out letters to read words (which really makes you realize how goofy the spelling of the English language is!).  Tonight I was writing words out for him to read, and he successfully worked through probably 10 or 15 of them, including some longer words like  ‘pillow’ and ‘cushion’.

At this point he started getting a little over-confident and goofy, and was just glancing at the letters and then coming up with whatever word seemed to fit, without really sounding the letters out.  So when I wrote the word ’shirt’ on the board, I reminded him about the sound that ’sh’ makes, and with a quick glance at the rest of the letters, he looked at Gavin and I and shouted out “SH*T, SH*T!!”.  He had a super excited look on his face, certain he had guessed it correctly.  We could barely contain our laughter (ok, so we both pretty much lost it) because here is this completely innocent 4 year old yelling a curse word at us with absolutely NO idea what he is saying, and convinced he got the word right.

We managed to regain our composure and reminded him to sound out *each letter, being careful not to skip over any.  He then corrected himself and inserted the ‘r’ into the word.  Thankfully he has no idea what word he was yelling out, nor what made his parents burst into laughter.  I guess I need to be careful what words I ask him to spell!

The color of the rain

We often check out the radar map when storms are predicted for our area.  We’ve been having a lot of storms these past few weeks, so have been explaining to Jackson about the rain and how you can look at the radar map to see where the rain is and if it is coming to us, as well as the color on the map to know how heavy the rain will be.  Obviously we have done this quite a few times recently, because yesterday when we told him that there would most likely be thunderstorms later in the day, the first thing he asked was “will it be green rain, red rain, or pink rain?”

How to kill a fly…

With a hammer of course!

kill-a-fly

And a notable Jackson-moment:

Jackson: “Mommy, can I play the Wii?”
Me: “No, I’m not going to turn the tv on on a beautiful day like today”
Jackson, without missing a beat: “Then can I turn the tv on?”
:)
