Caution: Party Ahead

When I asked Jackson a while ago what kind of cake he wanted this year, without hesitation he said ‘bulldozer!’. So… that led to a construction theme for his party, which we had on Sunday at a local park. The weather was beautiful, and he was allowed to invite 4 friends (the age he was turning). Most of them have younger siblings around Morgan’s age, so we had quite the crowd there.

If you have kept up with this blog for any length of time, you know that I enjoy making cakes. It’s not something I do very often or have much time for, but birthdays are the perfect excuse for me to spend hours making a cake. I don’t really enjoy party planning or anything like that, but I love making these cakes. Here’s my repertoire I posted about previously. Last year I made Jackson an airplane cake, and knew I had a lot to live up to after that one, but I think the bulldozer came out pretty great! Gavin helped a ton with getting the right dimensions and adding a lot of the detailed piping at the end (there is even an air vent on the back!

We played some games where the kids had to push little dump trucks with sand through cones and empty them out, and they also had to throw some sand bags into bowls.  For their prizes they got construction hats and tool aprons (courtesy of Home Depot)

And Jackson can always eat some cake!

Both sets of grandparents were in town for the occasion, so Morgan had fun with them, as well as some of the other younger kids.

Overall, we had a great time, and loved celebrating our sweet Jackson!

Bathtime

So I know I said before that Mackenzie doesn’t end up getting very many baths. Well, here is proof at least that she does take one occasionally! And she really likes them too!

Birthday Boy

As I mentioned previously, Gavin took Jackson to downtown Atlanta on the afternoon of his 4th birthday.  They rode the MARTA train down and had fun running through through the dancing water in Centennial Park.  Amazingly enough, neither of them got wet!

3/23 Weekly Roundup

I haven’t done a round-up in a while, even though I have been doing some grocery shopping here and there. I figured now is a good time to go ahead and start it up again, as I got some good deals at the store this week.

Weekly Menu:

  • Monday: Thai red curry vegetables and shrimp, broccoli
  • Tuesday: Chicken enchiladas, rice, chips (also making extra to bring to a friend who had a baby)
  • Wednesday: Mariachi chicken and cauliflower
  • Thursday: Potstickers with carrots and snap peas, eggrolls
  • Friday: Ravioli
  • Saturday: leftovers or Chick fil A
  • Sunday: Eggplant parmesan or tequila chicken (depending on if we grill or not)

Grocery:

Kroger- Got sale items, as well as 2 gallons of Horizon Organic milk that were marked down to $3.

  • Spent: 29.33
  • Full item value: 50.74
  • Saved: 21.41 (42%)

Publix- Again got sale items and lots of fruit

  • Spent: 36.18
  • Full item value: 66.61
  • Saved: 30.43 (46%)

Totals:

  • Spent: 65.51
  • Full item value: 117.35
  • Saved: 51.84 (44%)

I did do another Walgreens run after my last post about the great Huggies deals.  I used my register rewards to get a few clearance items I used as party favors for Jackson’s party, as well as a free-after-rebate item, and a couple other clearance craft supplies.  I find that Walgreens always has craft supplies (markers, crayons, etc…) on clearance, and you can really get great deals, so I try to occasionally make sure I have time to scan the aisles!

Classic Toys

If you have kids, you know that there are some toys that are just winners.  They are usually the most unassuming and least electronic toys, with minimal (if any) bells and whistles.  Often times the toys that are winners in our house have surprised me… not ones I would have picked out in the beginning!  So I wanted to list a few of the toys that have been winners in our household, even long after the time when I thought Jackson and Morgan would have grown out of them.  I love that most of them require THEM to be the creative ones.

music-table3Leapfrog Music Table - both kids have loved this, and we have lots of adorable video of them playing with it and dancing away (ie: swinging hips) when they are barely able to stand up.  Very cute. The legs also come off so they can play with it on the ground (currently put away until Mackenzie will use it).

pound-a-ball2Parents Mirror Pound a Ball - we lost the orange ball pretty quickly, and never found it, but even with 3 balls, both kids have loved this toy.  Yes, it can get loud, and yes, it can take a bit of parental intervention to remove all the *other toys they have stuck down in this thing, but I would still list it as one of our favorites. (It’s also been put away right now waiting for little Mackenzie to use one day)

erase-board2This picture isn’t exactly the one we have, but is very similar.  This has been a GREAT toy, both kids have loved it, and we have started using it with Jackson to practice his letters and numbers.  The only drawback to ours is that the part you pull down to erase is pretty tricky, so when they are real young, kids need help to erase.  But both mine have figured it out eventually.  Ours has the slots at the top for the magnets to go into like this does, but I have seen them made with pull out drawers to store the magnets, and I think they would be less likely to get lost that way.  We are almost always missing one of our 5 magnets - when we find it, then another goes missing!  This toy has taken a LOT of banging, and is still holding up great.

truck3Again, this is not the one that we have, but close enough.  We actually have 2 of these, one for Jackson and one for Morgan.  They do have music, but mostly they love them because they can ride up and down our wood floors, chasing each other, etc.  Morgan likes to ride hers outside since she’s still too small for her bike.  Jackson also enjoys ‘fixing’ the trucks - using a screwdriver to take the batteries out and put them back in.

trains3Train tracks and trains (we have a couple sets) - these are from IKEA and very inexpensive (they also fit with the more expensive Brio tracks I believe). Jackson has spent hours putting these tracks together in different configurations.  Morgan likes driving the trains on the tracks, when Jackson lets her (which is not very often!).

puzzle2Good quality puzzles.  We have a number of wooden ones, some easy and some harder (we especially like the ones by Melissa and Doug), and my kids do them over and over and over. Morgan has already learned her alphabet (even though she doesn’t talk yet) by doing the one pictured above so many times.

lite-brite2Lite Brite - this was a gift for Jackson over a year ago, and he loves it.  He quickly used up the pages that came with it, but has since spent hours creating boats and trains and spaceships - you name it!  Morgan loves to play with it as well (when he lets her!).

beads2shapes2Beads and shape pieces - these are from IKEA (for a total of $8), and literally provide hours and hours of entertainment.  Jackson and Morgan both love playing with these - you have to put the beads on little spikes on the plastic piece, then you iron it when they are done and they melt together.  Now, these do end up all over the floor.  But my kids know that if they don’t pick them up, I will vacuum them up, and they will be gone.  The container comes with enough beads to literally last years.  I have found it is much more fun to actually create the designs than do anything with them once they are ironed.  Jackson loves to make patterns with his shapes, and Morgan is learning great finger dexterity, because it is tricky to put them on the shapes, but she really enjoys it, and of course wants to do what big brother is doing.  Warning - if you iron too long, it will melt the plastic piece. We know from experience!  But you can also find smaller kits of this in the dollar section of Michaels. :)

Other items:

- music - the kids love putting on music and dancing away and doing the hand motions
- computer and electronic games - Jackson is really getting into these, and thankfully there are a lot of educational options.  We do have to limit his screen time each day though, or he would play these all day long!
- matchbox cars - another classic for Jackson
- marbles - actually mine from when I was younger. Jackson would spend so much time transferring them from one container to another. Can you tell my kids like things with tiny pieces?

Morgan has yet to get into anything girly, except they do enjoy taking her tea set and pretending they are going camping or having a picnic.  I get served chicken nuggets and hot dogs a lot. :)

I’m sure there will be other toys that will attain my ‘classic’ status as the kids get older, but for now these are the ones that both kids have enjoyed.  I’ve tried hard to minimize the toys in our house - partly because we have very small living space that won’t hold all sorts of toys, and partly because I really find that they do so much better concentrating on just a few things.  In fact, Jackson lost all of his toys in his room as a discipline measure a couple weeks ago.  For a short while he complained, but was able to earn one toy back a day.  After 2 days he had only the drawing board and his train tracks (his first 2 choices), and he completely forgot about all the others that were still sitting in another room.  Almost a week later I put them back in his room because I was cleaning the office and needed the space.  But it really showed me that most of his stuff he wouldn’t miss, as long as he has a few quality toys.  So with his birthday upon us, we’ll do the ‘one in, one out’ rule - for each toy he brings into his room, he has to choose one to put away or give away.

This turned into a long post, but I know some of you with younger kids might find this interesting, especially when looking for new toys/gifts.  I would also love to know if you have any toys in your house you consider classics, especially for those of you with kids older than mine.  Please leave a comment with any suggestions!

Jackson is 4!

Wow, our little boy is 4.  Amazing.  He’s been feeling a bit funky lately - just really really tired, so it was a bit of a low key day, with a party planned for Sunday.  He did go with Gavin on MARTA (the local public train) to Centennial Park, and loved seeing the water shoot up in the air (will post those pictures soon).  Earlier in the day he and Morgan were playing with chalk, and decided to color their noses - Jackson called himself the ‘chalk man’.  So, here is our handsome birthday boy:

Mackenzie - 8 weeks

Here are some pictures of Mackenzie from the last couple weeks. She has started smiling, which is SO cute! It took us a few days to actually get it on camera, because every time she saw the big black camera right in front of her, it caught her attention and she would stop smiling. So here she is in many different poses and faces…

She’s also started sleeping better at night.  She still has the occasional night where she is up more often, but she’s going about 5-6 hours now.  Two nights ago she shocked me by going from 10:30 to 6:15!  I couldn’t believe it when I woke up - sometimes 6:15 is when I’m feeding her for the 2nd time at night, not the first.  But normally she goes from about 10:30 to sometime between 3 and 4.  Not too bad… at least we are making progress!

Crayon Rolls

I am a pretty amateur sewer, but I like to try new things now and again.  I had seen these crayon rolls on a few blogs recently, and then found a tutorial for how to make one.  Since March is birthday madness month (we have 3 birthday parties this month, plus Jacksons), I thought it would be a fun and economical way to do birthday gifts.  I ended up making 2 of them, one for a girl turning 2, and another for a girl turning 3.  I learned quite a bit making them, and think that my next one will turn out better, but for a first try, I thought they came out pretty cute!  Here’s the first:

Family & Kid's Quotes 11 Mar 2009 10:54 pm

Things that make you smile

First, a little background:  Jackson just last week finally finished his last potty chart - it took him forever, because although he has been staying dry all day for months now, he almost always was dirtying his nighttime diaper in the mornings.  So he didn’t get a star on his chart for the day unless he did his business in the potty AND stayed dry all day.  Needless to say, it took a while.  He’s finally done with his chart (and the dirty diapers, I hope!), and as his final reward he got a nice wooden puzzle of the US.  He was so excited about it, and I think it gave him the motivation to get his chart finished.  So the past few days, he’s been putting it together and slowly learning the names of the states.

So today at lunch, Jackson and Morgan were eating peanut butter and honey sandwiches, one of their favorites.  I was washing dishes at the sink when I hear Jackson say behind me “Look, Morgan made a Texas!”.  I turn around, not sure if I had actually heard the word ‘Texas’ in his sentence, and sure enough, her half of a sandwich sure did resemble the state of Texas.  :)

I chuckled all day whenever I thought of it.  So cute.
